Najib Mikati, the caretaker prime minister of Lebanon said the Israeli airstrike on Beirut shows it “does not care” about international calls for a ceasefire.
Makati is in New York for the United Nations general assembly.
A spokesperson for UN said the attack on Beirut is being watched with "great alarm".
Israeli military has issued a statement acknowledging that they hit residential blocks in their attempt to destroy Hezbollah headquarters.
"Hezbollah's central headquarters was intentionally built under residential buildings in the heart of the Dahieh, in Beirut, as part of Hezbollah's strategy of using Lebanese people as human shields," the statement reads.
The attack happened shortly after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly.
Israeli air strikes on Beirut turned four buildings into rubble, according to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV, which added that more than 15 missiles struck the area at the same moment.
Al Arabiya and Fox News say the target of Israel's airstrike on Hezbollah's central headquarters was Hassan Nasrallah. However, Al Arabiya's report says the operation "failed".
