Iranian parliament speaker rejects Trump claims

Apr 17, 2026, 23:20 GMT+1

Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Friday all seven recent claims by the US President are lies, and the us will fail in both war and negotiations.

Ghalibaf warned that with continued blockade, the strait of Hormuz will not remain open; shipping will follow only designated routes with Iran's permission, decided by field conditions not social media.

"The President of the United States made seven claims in one hour, all seven of which were false. They did not win the war with these lies, and they will certainly not get anywhere in negotiations either. With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open," he posted on X.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday the newly announced ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is “unprecedented,” calling it the first such agreement in 78 years.

Trump said that the US and Iran negotiations are not tied to the Lebanon agreement, adding: “Our deal with Iran is not in any way tied to Lebanon.”

“We will make Lebanon great again,” while describing the ceasefire as a major diplomatic breakthrough brokered by the United States.

Iran nuclear talks near agreement, uranium stockpile to be removed, Trump says

US President Donald Trump said on Friday negotiations with Iran are “very close” to agreement, adding that “most of the points are already negotiated and agreed to,” during remarks at a TPA event in Arizona.

Trump said the United States would ensure Iran has “no nuclear dust,” referring to what he described as material produced by earlier U.S. strikes.

“No money will exchange hands in any way, shape or form,” he said, adding that Iran would “never have a nuclear weapon.”

Iran MP threatens impeachment of foreign minister over comments

Apr 17, 2026, 22:38 GMT+1

Iranian lawmaker Morteza Mahmoudi said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi would face impeachment over his social media remarks, accusing him of repeated “ill-timed” statements during a sensitive wartime period.

In a post on X, Mahmoudi said that “if it were not for the excuse of war,” Araghchi would have been impeached for his “Twitter message.” He said this was not the first time the foreign minister had made what he described as “strange and untimely statements” during critical moments, adding that such remarks had an impact on global oil and energy markets.

Iran insists on limiting Hormuz traffic and charging tolls - WSJ

Apr 17, 2026, 22:11 GMT+1

Iran told mediators that it will continue limiting vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz even after a US-brokered ceasefire, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal.

Under the reported plan, only a limited number of commercial ships would be allowed to pass each day, with coordination required through Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Ships would also be subject to transit fees or tolls.

The report says Iran is presenting the system as part of a post-deal maritime arrangement, while retaining the ability to block vessels it considers hostile.
