Strike on Evin prison is a breach of international law, UN rights office says

Israeli forces attacked targets inside Iran in three separate waves by 9 a.m. on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the armed forces' main operational command, said.

The Iranian military had earlier warned that any aggression would be met with a firm response and said Israel would "pay a heavy price," he added.

Iran’s top security body said on Monday that its armed forces had compelled Israel to cease hostilities following a wave of retaliatory strikes, including on US and Israeli targets, during 12 days of cross-border escalation.

In a statement published by state media, the Secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said Iranian forces had responded to Israeli “aggression” with “unprecedented courage,” citing missile attacks on the US Al Udeid air base in Qatar and multiple sites across Israeli territory.

“The children of this nation answered the call of the Supreme Leader” the statement read, referring to Ali Khamenei. “With unmatched bravery, they delivered crushing blows to every act of enemy aggression.”

“Our armed forces, with their fingers on the trigger, do not place the slightest trust in enemy words,” the statement said. “They are ready to deliver a decisive and regret-inducing response to any further act of aggression.”

France on Tuesday called on Iran to immediately engage in negotiations that would lead to an accord over its nuclear and ballistic missile program, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Tuesday that resuming cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog is key to achieving a successful agreement with Iran.

Grossi also said he has proposed to meet soon with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, indicating a push for renewed dialogue following the announcement of Iran-Israel ceasefire.
