All 14,000 operating cascades at Natanz likely destroyed, IAEA chief says

Jun 16, 2025, 17:19 GMT+1

A sudden power loss likely crippled Iran’s centrifuges at Natanz, strongly implying that all 14,000 operating cascades may have been destroyed, the UN nuclear watchdog's Director General Rafael Grossi said on Monday.

“One of the underground facilities there, halls, where... centrifuge cascades were... or are installed, our assessment is that with this sudden loss of external power, in great probability, the centrifuges have been severely damaged if not destroyed altogether,” Grossi told the BBC.

Only Hall A at Natanz was active, housing 82 cascades, according to the IAEA’s May report.

“They (Iran) should talk and they should do it immediately," he said.

Asked what it would take for the US to get involved in war, Trump said, “I don’t want to talk about that. We’ve always supported Israel. Israel is doing very well right now.”

Iran is seeking to end hostilities and resume nuclear negotiations, The Wall Street Journal reported citing Middle Eastern and European officials, with messages sent to both Israel and the US through Arab intermediaries.

“Iran has told Arab officials they would be open to returning to the negotiating table as long as the US doesn’t join the attack,” the officials said.

Messages relayed to Israel also warned “it is in the interest of both sides to keep the violence contained.”
