The Kayhan newspaper, under Khamenei's representative, wrote in an editorial that the United States was concerned about the possibility of an alliance between Iran and the Taliban and the "formation of an active resistance force in the east" of Iran. According to Kayhan, the Taliban see Iran as having interests in Afghanistan, including border security, Shiite security and Helmand water.
