Former head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, said Monday that both Iran and the US are determined to reach a positive conclusion in their negotiations, warning that failure would further complicate matters.
Salehi said that the complexity of issues will escalate with time, leading to a more entangled situation. He cautioned that derailed talks would have detrimental consequences for all, resulting in undesirable outcomes.
“As time passes, the complexity of these issues will increase, turning into an even more tangled situation than the current one,” Salehi said.
He downplayed the risk of conflict, describing President Trump as "a person who does not take uncalculated risks to unnecessarily involve America,” adding that a US military attack on Iran would lead to a prolonged conflict for years.
The Italian capital will host the second round of negotiations between Iran and the United States on Saturday, Axios reported on Sunday, citing two sources with knowledge of the issue.
Donald Trump said on Sunday he met with his advisers on Iran and expected a quick decision.
"We'll be making a decision on Iran very quickly," he told reporters aboard Air Force One, without giving further details.
Director General of the UN's nuclear watchdog Rafael Grossi will visit Tehran this week ahead of the next round of talks between Iran and the United States which are expected to be held in Europe, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Europe will host the next round of Iran-US negotiations, slated for Saturday April 19, the spokesman for the Iranian parliament's foreign policy commission said Sunday citing deputy foreign minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi.
The talks, however, will continue to be mediated by Oman, the parliamentarian said.
CNN had earlier cited White House sources as saying the next round is expected to take place in Europe next week.
Amwaj Media, a media outlet with links to the Islamic Republic close circles, also cited what it called an informed political source in the region as saying that “They will not gather in Muscat, but somewhere in Europe.”
The April 12 negotiations between Iran and the United States were held in the Omani foreign minister's house in Muscat, Takht-Ravanchi was quoted as saying.
However, following the talks, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said the next round of talks would not be held in Oman.
