Iran after Khamenei is less clear, no less hardline and more militarized. The central question in Tehran is no longer only who holds the title of supreme leader, but which networks can shape, block or enforce decisions.

The public rift over US talks has exposed real tensions inside the Islamic Republic, from IRGC-linked security figures to negotiation-facing insiders and ideological hardliners. But the split should not be mistaken for a democratic opening.

The familiar “moderates versus hardliners” frame risks hiding more than it reveals. The dispute is over how to preserve the system – through tactical negotiation, coercive escalation, ideological discipline, or some mix of all three.
